Democrats Propose Expansion Of Supreme Court In New Bill

Democrats have proposed a bill that would expand the U.S. Supreme Court. However, it’s not receiving the most enthusiastic response.

To put an end to the conservative control, Democrats released a bill that would expand the U.S. Supreme Court by four justices. The plan, which was proposed on Thursday, garnered an unexcited response from some Democrats and was completely shut down by Republicans.

According to U.S. News, Sen. Ed Markey and House of Representatives members Jerrold Nadler, Hank Johnson, and Mondaire Jones introduced a bill in both chambers that would increase the number of justices from nine to 13. Markey said the move would “restore balance” to the court. During Trump’s term, he appointed three justices, which gave the court a 6-3 conservative majority, U.S. News reports.

“Senate Republicans have politicized the Supreme Court, undermined its legitimacy, and threatened the rights of millions of Americans,” Markey said in a statement.

Last Friday, Joe Biden created a bipartisan commission to look into possibly making changes to the Supreme Court. Some of the amendments that could be made are expanding the court or implementing a time limit on how long justices can serve instead of the current lifetime terms. In the meantime, the commission has 18 days to report its findings. The number of Supreme Court Justices has been nine since 1869.
