Democrats voted against a $1 trillion stimulus bill Sunday that is meant to help small businesses and give cash payments to Americans struggling during the coronavirus pandemic.
While Republicans want to move quickly to get money in the hands of Americans who have been laid off, Democrats claim that the bill will only bail out Wall Street and big corporations.
The final vote will be held Monday, but Democrats already unanimously blocked a provision that would lend hundreds of billions of dollars to major industries like hotels, casinos, and cruise lines.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was frustrated after the vote, saying: “We’re fiddling here, fiddling with the emotions of the American people, fiddling with the markets, fiddling with our health care.”
But Democrat Chuck Schumer said they would not vote for the bill “because among other problems it includes huge bailouts without protections for people and workers and without accountability, and because it shortchanges our hospitals and health care workers who need our help.”
The proposed bill would allow for direct cash payments of up to $1,200 for Americans who make less than $100,000 a year, $2,400 to married couples, and $500 per child.
It plans to give hundreds of billions in loans to small businesses that have been forced to close during the lockdowns.
But Democrats say they want more funding for hospitals and health care workers as they’ve experienced shortages in beds, masks, and ventilators.
Part of the bill could see Donald Trump’s properties and businesses receive a bailout, which Democrats are unhappy with.

Hi KB!! I really love all of your articles but this one is misleading. Democrats AND Republicans voted against this bill because it has no protections for American workers. I think you remember the bailout of 08 that went directly to Wall Street and left the majority of Americans without their home or in debt. Or even the tax cuts of 2017 that big corporations were supposed to give to workers but instead bought stocks and inflated the market. What’s the point of giving the airline industry more money if they are going to continue to lay off workers?
