Trump’s administration has been falling apart since he took office.
On Sunday, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen put in her resignation after going back and forth with Trump over illegal border crossings.
According to a recent tweet from Trump, Nielsen’s resignation will go into effect immediately, and Kevin McAleenan, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner will serve as acting DHS Secretary.
“Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen will be leaving her position, and I would like to thank her for her service,” Trump tweeted. ”….I am pleased to announce that Kevin McAleenan, the current U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, will become Acting Secretary for @DHSgov. I have confidence that Kevin will do a great job!”
Neilsen’s resignation comes a few days after Trump announced that he would like to go in a “tougher” direction with his nomination for the ICE director.
According to CNN, sources close to the situation stated that Nielsen had a meeting with Trump on Sunday at 5 pm to discuss immigration, border issues and how to move forward.
Nielsen had no intentions on resigning but was apparently forced to do.
According to reports, Trump has become frustrated with everything going on at the border, including the influx of migrants.
A senior administration official spoke with CNN and stated that Nielsen “believed the situation was becoming untenable with the President becoming increasingly unhinged about the border crisis and making unreasonable and even impossible requests.”
Two hours after the meeting Nielsen tweeted her resignation, “To the brave and dedicated men and women of @DHSgov, I submitted my resignation to the President this evening. I am eternally grateful and proud of what you do each and every day to protect our homeland- each of you are why I came back to serve my country.”
