Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of murdering George Floyd, was just named in two new civil lawsuits alleging he used excessive force and similar tactics to kill George Floyd.

Reuters reports two separate lawsuits that were filed against Chauvin. John Pope and Zoya Code experienced aggressive incidents in 2017 with the former cop. Seven other Minneapolis police are also named in the lawsuit, but it’s no coincidence that Chauvin’s past is catching up with him.

Pope and Code’s attorney called the incidents “reprehensible” in a statement.

“It is simply reprehensible that three years before Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd, he used the same and other deadly tactics on John and Zoya, unchecked and undisciplined by his fellow officers and MPD supervisors.”

Pope and Code’s attorney Bob Bennet says, “We will not stop seeking justice for the victims of serial predator Derek Chauvin and those MPD officers who failed to intervene, and will hold accountable all those in power who allowed and enabled this type of deadly, racist behavior to continue.”

In Pope’s incident, he was 14 when Chauvin allegedly entered his bedroom during a domestic disturbance call. He rushed Pope and “struck him multiple times on the head with a large flashlight.”

In Code’s separate incident, she was handcuffed, and Chauvin allegedly slammed her head on the ground and pinned her using his knee, very similar to how he handed George Floyd.

The good news in these cases is that both incidents were captured in the body camera footage.

Chauvin currently serves a 22 and a half year sentence after Floyd’s murder that shocked the nation. He pleaded guilty in federal court and is responsible for Floyd’s death, denying him of his constitutional rights and causing “bodily injury and death.”
