Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced Friday afternoon to 22.5 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd. Chauvin will serve 15 years behind bars and 7.5 on parole.
The fired officer was convicted of second and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in April after pinning Floyd to the ground with a knee to his neck for more than nine minutes. The murder, which was caught on video, sparked worldwide protests.
Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill said the sentence was not based on emotion or sympathy but shared “we need to recognize the pain of the Floyd family.”
RIP George Floyd
