Back in March, Matt Barnes announced the official end of his beef with former teammate Derek Fisher over his ex, Gloria Govan, but now, despite the reconciliation, Fisher has stepped in to support his fiancée in her longstanding legal battle with Barnes.
In May, Barnes filed a suit against Govan for allegedly stealing $300k from him in their marriage. Days later, Govan fired back with a suit of her own, accusing Barnes of defamation over the accusations, including Barnes’ claim that she was blocking his visitation of their sons.
But now, in a new filing, Fisher is backing his soon-to-be wife with text messages from Barnes, to implicate him in the defamation claim.
According to Fisher’s docs obtained by The Blast, he says he and Barnes “have each other’s cell phone numbers,” and have exchanged several text messages. In fact, back in April, according to Fisher, Barnes texted him “accusing [Govan] of crimes and acts of dishonesty and otherwise impugning her and her good name, profession and reputation.”
“Listen….,” Barnes wrote in the text, as provided by Fisher. “I’m not sure how much she’s told you…But she’s mad at me cause I found out she stole nearly a million dollars forged my signature & stole my ss# to get her parent a nightclub & the house they live in…Since we’ve been going to court over that situation she’s been holding that hate & frustration for me against my boys.”
According to the publication, Fisher says he knows that Barnes’ previous statements have caused his lady a great deal of distress, which is why her defamation case should not be tossed.
The case is ongoing.
