Two Detroit police officers are in hot water after failing to act after a shooting took place right in front of them.
Dash-cam footage captured the moment on June 30th when a man pulled out a gun, leaned out of the backseat of a blue car, and began firing at a man on foot. When the shooting started, the police car that held the dash camera sped away quickly from the scene without administering aid to the shooting victim or trying to stop the gunman. At some point, the officers seemed to have a change of heart about their actions because they turned around and returned to help the victim, who survived.
The footage of the scurrying officers was discovered during a routine check of all police cameras by a supervisor. Once the video escalated up the chain of command, the officer who was driving was immediately suspended. The other officer is on medical leave, though it is unclear why. However, police officials have confirmed that Detroit Police Department will determine their fate upon return.
Interim Chief James White called the incident “troubling” and “not consistent with our training.”
“And it’s not consistent with the expectations that are set by myself and my command team,” White added.
Both the shooter and driver of the vehicle have not yet been captured.
