Detroit Lions Cut Reggie Bush

In an interesting turn of events, Reggie Bush has become the latest football player to get released by his team. As of this afternoon, the Detroit Lions have parted ways with their running back of two seasons. Bush was originally slated to stay in Detroit until 2016, with two years left in his contract. Now that he has been cut, he will not receive the $3.5 million base salary that he was supposed to make next season. Taking Bush off the payroll will help to free up money for the Lions so that they can have the salary cap space to resign All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. With Bush gone, the Lions will now have to depend on veteran Joique Bell and a young Theo Riddick, both of whom saw increased playing time and productivity on the field this past season due to Bush dealing with an injury. Of course, the Lions could also be planning to pick up a fresh new running back in the upcoming draft.

In his first year with the Lions, Bush showed he had great potential, putting up more than 1,000 rushing yards over the course of the season. At the start of 2014, he was predicted to have another great season but as it turned out, he was limited to only 297 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns due to an ankle injury that sidelined him for three months. However, with his speed and agility on the field, a healthy Bush could still be a valuable asset for the right team.

Bush is now a free agent and will be free to sign with any team. He started his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints, where he won his first Super Bowl, then moved on to Miami, followed by Detroit. Now he will have to look for a new home once again. I think I speak for all the women (and some men) in Atlanta when I say, come to the A, Reggie! The Falcons could use a new running back anyway….
