Detroit Lions Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn Declines New England Patriots Head Coach Interview

When defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn attended the Detroit Pistons’ home game on Monday night, he was greeted with a standing ovation that lasted almost thirty seconds. The love Detroit has for the Lions and everyone who has been part of their rebuild is evident, especially as they lead the team to its first number-one seed in over thirty years.

Glenn is focusing on the playoffs, but he is also one of the hottest names in head coaching circles, as five teams are currently searching for a football coach. The New England Patriots fired Jerod Mayo two hours after their game, a decision that has received a lot of pushback.

Many believe Mayo did the best he could with the roster and a rookie quarterback who was unable to start in the first game. However, the Patriots’ front office and owner Robert Kraft decided that the former player’s leadership had run its course.

Former offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, Pep Hamilton, and coach/former quarterback Byron Leftwich were both interviewed on Tuesday. On Thursday, the coach many believe will receive the job, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, sat down with the Patriots. Vrabel was a part of the coaching staff from 2001 to 2008.

Aaron Glenn’s interview was expected this week, and reports came out that Glenn ultimately declined to interview for the position. However, Glenn has five other interviews scheduled for this weekend, including with the New York Jets, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders, and Jacksonville Jaguars.

If NFL teams are smart, Glenn will receive a head coaching job this upcoming month, although his current job is far from finished. He plans to navigate his depleted defense through the tough NFC divisional playoffs and potentially win the first Super Bowl for the Detroit organization.
