DeVonta Smith, Alabama Crimson Tide Wide Receiver, Wins 2020 Heisman Trophy

DeVonta Smith has just won the 2020 Heisman Trophy, becoming the first receiver to win in nearly 30 years.

According to Yahoo Sports, the Alabama star was awarded the 2020 Heisman Trophy on Tuesday ahead of his teammate Mac Jones, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, and Florida quarterback Kyle Trask.

Smith’s win makes him the first wide receiver to win the Heisman since Michigan’s Desmond Howard won the award 30 years ago.

DeVonta Smith is now the third Alabama player to win the Heisman Trophy in the last 12 seasons. Mark Ingram, who currently plays for Baltimore Ravens, was the first Alabama Heisman winner in 2009, followed by Tennessee Titans rusher Derrick Henry, who won the trophy in 2015.

Smith thanked his parents, coaches, and Alabama teammates in his acceptance speech saying, “To all the young kids out there who aren’t the biggest, not the strongest, just keep pushing,” he said. “I’m not the biggest, I’ve been doubted a lot because of my size, and really, it just comes down to if you put your mind to it, you can do it. No job’s too big.”
