More details about the dynamic between Sean “Diddy” Combs and Cassie Ventura were revealed in court on Monday, as Diddy’s former personal assistant took the stand and described the intense level of control the music mogul allegedly had over the singer.
David James, who worked as Combs’ personal assistant from 2007 to 2009, testified that Cassie once told him she couldn’t leave Diddy, even though she admitted the environment was chaotic.
James recalled a moment in Miami when Combs had rented a yacht in an attempt to impress her. While outside smoking with Cassie, she allegedly told James, “This place is crazy.” When James asked why she didn’t just leave, Cassie responded, “He controls my career, pays my allowance, and pays my rent.”
The conversation, James said, stuck with him. He also recalled another incident during a car ride in Los Angeles where Diddy referred to Cassie as both his “queen” and “very moldable” in a conversation with a friend.
The testimony added to a growing portrait of control and manipulation in Combs’ inner circle. James said during the hiring process in 2007, a female executive pointed to a framed photo of Diddy and told him, “This is Mr. Combs’ kingdom and we are all here to serve in it.”
James grew emotional as he recounted the cult-like loyalty expected from those in Diddy’s orbit. “It wasn’t just a job,” he said in tears, grabbing a tissue. “It was serving him.”
While the court adjourned for the day, James is expected to return to the stand Tuesday for further questioning.
