Hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is appealing a federal judge’s decision to keep him in custody while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
On Monday, Diddy’s legal team officially filed a notice in the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, aiming to challenge Judge Andrew L. Carter‘s ruling that denied Combs’ request for release. His lawyers had previously indicated they would take this step.
Combs, 54, has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since September 17 after pleading not guilty to charges that allege he used his influence to coerce women into drug-induced sexual acts with male sex workers, referred to as “Freak Offs.”
Judge Carter rejected a proposal that would have allowed Combs to await trial under house arrest at his Florida residence, with GPS monitoring and restricted visitation. The proposal also included a $50 million bail, but the judge found it insufficient to ensure the safety of witnesses and maintain the integrity of the case.
Combs’ attorney, Marc Agnifilo, had earlier suggested transferring him to a different facility in New Jersey due to concerns about the conditions at the Brooklyn jail. However, that option was later dropped.
Combs is expected back in court for a status conference on October 9.
