Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva tragically died in a fiery car accident in Spain early Thursday morning. Spanish Civil Guard officials confirmed the 28-year-old soccer player and his 25-year-old sibling were found dead near Zamora after their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames.
The brothers, traveling alone near the Portuguese border, were reportedly en route to Santander to catch a ferry to England. Local reports suggest Jota had been advised against flying due to a recent lung procedure, though that detail remains unconfirmed.
Police are investigating the cause, including a possible blown tire. Forensic analysis of the bodies is underway. Graphic video from the crash site showed tire marks, destroyed guardrails, and the burned-out vehicle surrounded by scorched earth.
Jota’s death comes weeks after his wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso. She had recently posted “Yes to forever” on social media. He leaves behind three children, including a baby born last year.
Liverpool FC issued a statement saying the club was “devastated” and asked for privacy. Manager Arne Slot added, “All I have are feelings that I know so many people will share… about a person and a player we loved dearly.”
Jota had played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s recent Premier League title and had just helped Portugal win the Nations League. Portuguese officials and global sports figures, including Cristiano Ronaldo and LeBron James, expressed their sorrow. Ronaldo said, “Just now we were together in the national team… Rest in peace, Diogo and André.”
