Disciplinary Action Recommended For Six U.S. Capitol Police Officers Involved In Capitol Riot

An internal investigation into the United States Capitol Police recommended disciplinary action in six cases against officers for their actions during the Capitol Riot that occurred on January 6. None of the officers will face criminal charges.

The USCP’s Office of Professional Responsibility opened 38 internal investigations, the department said in a statement. Investigators were able to identify officers in 26 of the cases and found no wrongdoing in 20.

In the cases where disciplinary action was recommended, there were three for conduct unbecoming, one for improper remarks, one for failure to comply with directives, and one for improper dissemination of information. A seventh case is still pending.

None of the officers’ names were made public, and no details about the incidents were released.

“The Department is committed to accountability when officers fail to meet the standards governed by USCP policies and the Congressional Community’s expectations,” the USCP statement read.

The statement says these cases “should not diminish the heroic efforts of the United States Capitol police officers. On January 6, the bravery and courage exhibited by the vast majority of our employees was inspiring.”

CNN reports that six Capitol Police Officers were suspended with pay in February for their actions in the January 6 attacks on the Capitol. Another 29 were placed under investigation at the time.
