Since Disney Plus launched back in November, there have been talks of a The Proud Family revival for the streaming platform.
Now, an official announcement has been made via @disneyplus, confirming the reboot.
“Hug ‘em,” the tweet wrote. “#TheProudFamily: Louder and Prouder, an all-new Original Series, is coming soon to #DisneyPlus!”
The good news doesn’t stop there; the massive streaming service also confirmed that the original cast is returning to reprise their roles.
“And the best part? The original cast is reprising their voice roles,” the tweet continued.
The original cast members returning include Kyla Pratt (Penny Proud), Tommy Davidson (Oscar Proud), Paula Jai Parker (Trudy Proud), Jo Marie Payton (Suga Mama), Karen Malina White (Dijonay Jones), Soleil Moon Frye (Zoey Howzer), Alisa Reyes (LaCienega Boulevardez) and Cedric The Entertainer (Uncle Bobby).
Original series creator Bruce W. Smith, as well as executive producer Ralph Farquhar, will return for the reboot.
The Proud Family writer Calvin Brown Jr. is also on board for the new series and will also co-executive produce while being story editor as well.
In a joint statement, Smith and Farquhar expressed why a reboot was destined to happen, stating, “In our minds, the show never really went away, as we still had tons of stories left to tell.”⠀⠀⠀
Agnes Chu, Senior Vice President of content over at Disney Plus, also expressed her excitement for the upcoming series, stating, “The show’s humor and relatable stories are as relevant with audiences today as ever.”
“Our audiences have loved rediscovering their favorite episodes of ‘The Proud Family,’ and we’re excited Bruce, Ralph, Calvin, and the returning cast are creating new stories for their new home on Disney Plus,” Chu added.
The Proud Family ran for two seasons, beginning in 2001 through 2005, airing 52 episodes and a TV movie.
The show followed the school and home life of teenage Penny Proud as she balanced maintaining a social life by hanging with friends, following her parent’s rules, and help take care of her infant twin siblings.
“The genius of the original Proud Family series was that, under the guise of a family comedy, it provided a brilliant social commentary on our life and times,” said President and Chief Creative Officer of Disney, Gary Marsh. “With this new series, Bruce and Ralph will once again challenge everyone to think differently about the world we share,” he continued.
Details regarding the reboot, such as when episodes will begin airing, and the plot have yet to be revealed.
“It’s the perfect time to bring back this show, and we can’t wait to take fans, old and new alike, on this journey with us,” Smith and Farquhar continued.
