After nearly two years of closure, Walt Disney World announced on Tuesday that its Typhoon Lagoon water park will reopen on Sunday.
As the coronavirus pandemic spread, Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Blizzard Beach were closed in March 2020. The main attractions at the Florida theme park reopened in the summer of 2020, but the water park remained closed as a precaution.
“As a result of this unprecedented pandemic and in line with direction provided by health experts and government officials, Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort will remain closed until further notice,” Disney said of the continued closure at the time.
During the closure, the theme park made preparations to maintain paying employees.
Visitors will be able to experience Typhoon Lagoon’s lazy river, wave pool, and water coaster once it reopens, according to the Associated Press.
The reopening comes as the omicron strain of the coronavirus has spread across the country, causing an increase in coronavirus cases.
As of Tuesday, 441,278 new cases have been reported with the United States setting a new daily record for the number of infections.
