Tulsa, Oklahoma’s district attorney, is recovering from injuries after he was allegedly stabbed by his daughter.
An argument between District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler and his 30-year-old daughter Jennifer led to Kunzweiler being stabbed. “Unfortunately today, I found myself in a situation that I hoped would never happen. Fortunately, my injuries are such that I am able to go home,” Kunzweiler said in a statement, NBC News reports.
According to Tulsa police captain Richard Meulenberg, both Jennifer and her father were taken to the hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police were called to the family’s home after receiving reports about a disturbance between the father and daughter; the daughter is believed to have been dealing with a “mental health crisis.” The daughter reportedly “cut herself and then went on to attack the DA.”
At one point, firefighters had to wrestle with Jennifer to “get her under control.” She was arrested for the incident this past Tuesday, NBC News reports.
“What happened was his daughter and he got into an altercation of sorts where she had stabbed him,” said Meulenberg. “The injury stemmed from a potential mental health crisis on the daughter’s side, and then that led to the assault on her father.”
In his statement, Steve Kunzweiler thanked those who helped through the alleged assault.
“Thank you to everyone who expressed concern for me and my family. I am most appreciative of the response from the Tulsa Fire Department, EMSA, the Tulsa Police Department and the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office. I am also very grateful for the professionalism and care of the staff and doctors at Saint Francis Hospital in treating me for my injuries,” he said.
