Couples filing for divorce are increasing due to the weariness of staying home under the social distancing order and the financial stress brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.
According to marital attorneys in Manhattan, there is a 50% increase in divorce inquiries from couples forced together while under quarantine.
The unpredictable swings of the stock markets see the wealthy couples divorcing to protect their assets from their spouse as the job market becoming almost none existent and small living quarters are pushing other couples down the road of divorce.
William D. Zabel, a New York divorce attorney, and a founding partner of Schulte Roth & Zabel told Page Six, “We’ve had an increased of calls within the past week from people seeking representation for divorce proceedings, a 50% increase, and I have been hearing the same from my colleagues at other firms.”
Zabel, who has represented clients like Howard Stern and Matt further explained, ”People who have enjoyed busy lives suddenly find themselves confined together, at a time of incredible anxiety.” Zabel continues, ”If wealthy people are looking for a rationale for divorce, an economic downturn is often motivation. I anticipate there will be a number of high profile divorce cases in the coming months.”
“The divorces coming out of this will stem from not having enough space, and being overwhelmed.” Melissa Thoen, a couples’ therapist and the clinical director of the Ackerman Institute for the Family in New York, tells The Post, ”In China, requests for divorce from couples coming out of months-long quarantines cannot be processed fast enough.”
