On Saturday, Kwame Grayson, the brother of DJ Kay Slay, took to Facebook to announce that the esteemed DJ will be remembered in the streets of New York City next month with a road bearing his name.
As indicated on a poster, the renaming ceremony for the street will occur on August 13th, coinciding with his 57th birthday. The event will be held at the intersection of East 105th Street and 1st Ave. in East Harlem. The specific name of the street hasn’t been revealed.
The hosting duties for the event will be carried out by Papoose, a close friend and collaborator of Kay Slay, along with Jarrod “General” Whitaker, the manager, and Ladi Kutz, the niece of the late rap legend. Additionally, an impressive lineup of prominent rappers, including 50 Cent, LL COOL J, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Tony Yayo, and many others, have been invited as special guests to add to the grandeur of the occasion.
Tragically, DJ Kay Slay passed away at the age of 55 in April 2022 after a lengthy struggle with COVID-19. At the time, the Hip Hop community was overwhelmed with an outpouring of tributes following Kay Slay’s untimely passing. Prominent figures such as Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, LL COOL J, Fat Joe, and Killer Mike, among others, expressed their deep sorrow at the loss of the iconic DJ.
“Dezzy Dez aka Kay Slay aka The Black Fat Joe love you my brother,” Fat Joe said. “You put on for the culture kept me on your tapes when i was cold always lead from your heart. I was praying hard for you i knew you’d make it i check almost everyday i had soooooo many stories to tell you since you been at the hospital.”
