On Thursday, December 4, a jury handed down a verdict in the murder trial of DJ Quik’s son, David Marvin Blake Jr., finding him guilty of second‑degree murder and shooting from a motor vehicle for the May 25, 2022 killing of 33‑year‑old Julio Moises Cardoza Jr. in Downey, California. The court also sustained gun‑use and great bodily injury enhancements, opening a possible prison sentence of up to 40 years to life.

According to the prosecution, the incident began when a fight broke out between Cardoza and another man at a residence in the 13200 block of Carfax Avenue, near the San Gabriel River. Blake Jr., who prosecutors say was in a car nearby, allegedly exited, shot the victim multiple times and fled the scene. Cardoza died hours later at a hospital.

Blake Jr. pleaded not guilty following his arrest on May 26, 2022, in Porter Ranch. At the time of his arrest he was being held on bail exceeding $2 million. Earlier court reports noted his role as a liaison to a former Compton city‑council member.

Sentencing is set for February 6 of the next year, where the judge will determine Blake Jr.’s actual term within the statutory maximum. For DJ Quik, whose real name is David Marvin Blake Sr., the blow adds to past family turmoil and comes amid a distinguished career that’s spanned decades in West Coast hip‑hop.

DJ Quik has not issued a statement regarding his son’s guilty verdict.
