Federal prosecutors have launched an early-stage investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James, according to multiple sources. The probe, run out of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York, is focused on whether James’ office crossed the line in its civil lawsuits against Donald Trump, his businesses, and the National Rifle Association.
James, a Democrat, famously won a $300 million civil fraud judgment against Trump and his company over claims they inflated his wealth, a figure that’s now ballooned past $500 million with interest. Trump is appealing. Her office also went after the NRA, unsuccessfully trying to dissolve it but later securing a jury verdict against longtime leader Wayne LaPierre for diverting millions for personal use.
The DOJ hasn’t said how far along the investigation is or what evidence it has. James’ attorney blasted the probe as political retaliation from Trump’s administration, calling it an “attack on the rule of law.”
This isn’t the first time James has been targeted. Earlier this year, the DOJ and FBI opened a separate investigation into allegations she falsified mortgage applications, which her attorney dismissed as paperwork mistakes.
James has been a consistent legal thorn in Trump’s side since his first term, leading multiple challenges to his policies. Trump, for his part, has accused her of bias and frequently attacks her on social media.
