From giving us her viral Silhouette Challenge to the controversial “Demons” video, Doja Cat is a trailblazer at just 29 years old.
Born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, the superstar, celebrates her birthday on October 21st. Her mainstream journey to stardom began with the quirky social media track “Mooo!” in 2018. While some hip-hop heads called out Doja’s lack of seriousness in her art, fans appreciated how she was able to showcase her sense of humor and ability to create infectious tunes. However, it was the release of her album “Hot Pink” in 2019 that cemented her place in music, showcasing her endless versatility. Hits such as “Say So,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100, brought her international fame, thanks in part to the viral success of the song on TikTok. The single “Streets” from the project reached a new level of internet hype when people bounded to their homes thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, participated in the seductive Silhouette Challenge, which involved dancing along to the song in a red light where only one’s silhouette is shown. This led to millions of videos being made, which only pushed the single.
Additionally, Doja’s genre-bending music, bold fashion choices, and artistic music videos have earned her numerous accolades, including 19 Grammy nominations and one win for her record, “Kiss Me More,” featuring SZA from Doja’s 2021 follow-up album, “Planet Her.”
