Dollar Tree has announced that it would no longer sell eggs because it can no longer afford the flat prices.
Over the past few months, egg prices have increased significantly due to the deadly avian flu, high production cost, and rising egg producers’ profits.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, egg prices increased by 55% for consumers and 38% for producers in February, which was about $4.21 for a dozen Grade A eggs.
Unfortunately, Dollar Tree doesn’t have the flexibility to raise egg prices on its customers to offset higher costs.
“Our primary price point at Dollar Tree is $1.25. The cost of eggs is currently very high,” said company spokesperson Randy Guiler. Dollar Tree will bring back eggs when “costs are more in line with historical levels.”
According to reports, Family Dollar, owned by Dollar Tree, will continue selling eggs.
Until 2021, Dollar Tree sold cartons of eight or six eggs for $1. The company announced the $1.25 price increase because selling everything for $1 hurt the business.
