The hit summer blockbuster ‘Straight Outta Compton’ is all anyone’s been talking about lately. Among the millions of people who have gone to see the movie are the Miami Dolphins and their head coach Joe Philbin. Philbin uncharacteristically decided to cancel practice last Thursday and instead he took all his players out to see the N.W.A. biopic. So what did Philbin think of the movie? “I actually liked it. I had never heard of Dr. Dre until I went to the movie,” he admitted. Wait…you’ve never heard of Dr. Dre? How Sway?!
In fact, the 54-year-old coach has never heard of N.W.A., period. “I liked the history of it. I didn’t know any of that stuff,” he added. “I thought it was good.” Philbin must’ve been living under a rock for the entire second half of the ’80s. But on top of being a huge rap icon, Dre has also produced hit after hit and he just recently became the richest man in hip-hop after his $3 billion deal with Apple. I mean, no one’s even gifted the man a pair of Beats before?
People have been noticing that Philbin is trying to develop a more personal relationship with his players this year. Typically known to be all work and no play, Philbin is starting to loosen up a little bit in hopes that it will help with the Dolphins’ team chemistry. Playing hooky from practice and going to see ‘Straight Outta Compton’ with his team is a start. Who knows, maybe now he’ll be able to rap a few lines from ‘Gangsta Gangsta’ or ‘F*** Tha Police’.
