Don Lemon shared a message to young journalists that hit different last night, especially in hindsight.

Just hours before being arrested by federal agents, Lemon shared pointed advice with Baller Alert’s Nya Étienne on the red carpet at the Black Music Collective, encouraging new journalists to forge their own lane in the face of uncertain times.
“Just be authentic. I think the people who are really thriving in this time are really authentic and fearless. You have to be fearless. It’s a whole new time in just media in general. And take advantage of it and look at it as an opportunity. Don’t try to be the old traditional journalist of yesteryear. It doesn’t play any role. Blaze your own trail. You have the internet, and also you have this thing that we’re shooting on, which is your own network.”
The conversation happened casually while cameras were rolling and flashes were popping. At the time, it felt like veteran wisdom being passed down. By the end of the night, it felt like a moment frozen in time. According to Lemon’s legal team, federal agents arrested him shortly after the event in connection with reporting he conducted in Minneapolis. His attorney says Lemon was exercising his First Amendment rights and acting strictly in a journalistic capacity.
Lemon, who has transitioned from legacy cable news into independent media, has been vocal about the changing landscape of journalism. His words to young reporters now carry extra weight as questions swirl around press freedom, government overreach, and who gets protected when telling uncomfortable truths.
For Nya Étienne, the exchange was meant to spotlight inspiration and access. Instead, it became something heavier. A reminder that telling the truth, especially in real time and on your own platform, still comes with real consequences.
And that fearlessness Lemon spoke about is not theoretical. It’s lived.
