Well, Donald Trump Jr. had time today. He chose to call out Dwayne Johnson, AKA The Rock, for his past transphobic 2011 tweets.
“Wow, @TheRock, you can’t just try to quietly delete transphobic attacks without giving a groveling apology and expect to ever work in Hollywood again.”
“Do @UnderArmour, @Ford, @Apple, and @Netflix and the rest of his sponsors/partners agree with this hateful rhetoric?”
Trump, Jr. is referencing the 2011 tweets in which The Rock wrote:
“@katierobin23..Shhh..don’t be angry Ms. Katie. It’s not your fault you’re turning tranny tricks to put yourself thru nursing school. shhh..”
Caitlyn Jenner also joined in on the slamming by replying to Trump’s tweet: “Hmmmm… the double standard is real. @TheRock I love you but cmon dude… let’s be real. Cancel culture has got to go. Use your platform. @DonaldJTrumpJr thanks for highlighting.”
Johnson has taken a lot of heat over his past remarks. He initially supported podcaster Joe Rogan following the current controversy from his use of racial slurs and falsehoods on the coronavirus on his Spotify podcast.
However, Newsweek reported that The Rock has since backtracked his support after videos surfaced of Rogan’s past use of racial slurs.
The Rock isn’t the only person under scrutiny. Spotify has also faced a slew of criticism from both public health experts and musical artists who claim the streaming platform has allowed Rogan to spread COVID-19 falsehoods on his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience.
Johnson commented his support on an Instagram post Rogan made that addressed the controversy. “Great stuff here, brother. Perfectly articulated. Look forward to coming on one day and breaking out the tequila with you,” the actor wrote.
And just like that, he received a lot of backlash, and some went on to reference Rohan’s use of the n-word.
“I was not aware of his N-word use prior to my comments, but now I’ve become educated to his complete narrative,” Johnson responded to a tweet from author Don Winslow on Saturday. “Learning moment for me.”
Rogan has since apologized on Instagram via a video. His apology follows singer-songwriter India.Arie’s post of a video compilation that showed him saying the N-word in clips of episodes over 12 years. The singer also announced that she was removing her music from Spotify.
Rogan told social media that his use of the slur was the “most regretful and shameful thing that I’ve ever had to talk about publicly” and added that he hadn’t said the word in years. But then defended himself by claiming the clips were taken out of context.
Hmmmm… the double standard is real. @TheRock I love you but cmon dude…let’s be real. Cancel culture has got to go. Use your platform. @DonaldJTrumpJr thanks for highlighting
