On Sunday, Donald Trump defended his decision to impose substantial tariffs on the United States’ top trading partners, acknowledging the potential for “some pain” but framing the move as necessary due to significant trade deficits.
He expressed this position via Truth Social after signing off on 25 percent tariffs for Canada and Mexico, and 10 percent for China, anticipating potential trade tensions.
“The ‘Tariff Lobby,’ headed by the Globalist, and always wrong, Wall Street Journal, is working hard to justify Countries like Canada, Mexico, China, and too many others to name, continue the decades long RIPOFF OF AMERICA, both with regard to TRADE, CRIME, AND POISONOUS DRUGS that are allowed to so freely flow into AMERICA,” Trump posted from his Mar-a-Lago estate. “THOSE DAYS ARE OVER!”
Trump emphasized that if companies produced goods domestically, tariffs wouldn’t be necessary. “This will be the Golden Age of America!” he declared. “Will there be some pain? Yes, maybe (and maybe not!). But we will make America great again, and it will all be worth the price that must be paid. We are a country that is now being run with common sense — and the results will be spectacular!!!”
Trump also suggested Canada “should become our Cherished 51st State,” a proposal that Canadian officials have previously rejected.
The tariffs, effective Tuesday, were met with swift backlash. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised retaliatory tariffs, while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum prepared defensive measures. China announced its intention to challenge the U.S. at the World Trade Organization.
Experts have cautioned that tariffs may lead to higher consumer costs, with the Tax Foundation estimating an average $830 tax increase per U.S. household.
