Donald Trump is planning to revamp the White House Rose Garden to resemble the patio at Mar-a-Lago.
According to sources, designs for the renovations include removing the manicured green lawn and replacing it with a hard surface, such as limestone. The president has even considered an interchangeable surface that could be swapped for hardwood for dancing. However, Trump does intend to keep the roses in the garden.
The redesigns have reportedly become a daily discussion for Trump, who has been busy signing executive orders. His White House Communications Director, Steven Cheung, stated, “The president is taking necessary steps in order to preserve and restore the greatness and glory of ‘the People’s House.’” He added, “The White House has not been given any tender, loving care in many decades.”
This isn’t the first time the Trump administration has modified the Rose Garden. During his first term, Melania Trump installed a new irrigation system and replaced mature dogwoods with new flowers arranged in a regimented pattern.
The Rose Garden, first opened in 1903 by First Lady Edith Roosevelt and later redesigned by Ellen Wilson in 1913, has historically hosted press conferences and presidential gatherings. While Jacqueline Kennedy’s White House Historical Association oversees structural changes, the National Park Service controls the garden itself.
Trump’s redesign is part of broader renovation ideas, including a chandelier for the Oval Office and a $100 million ballroom.
“I build beautiful ballrooms,” Trump said. “It was going to be as beautiful as it can be.”
