A DoorDash driver says he left a note for a customer who didn’t leave him a tip: “If you can’t afford to tip, then you should go pick it up yourself.”
Esmond Fountain said he had to leave his two cents in a note to a customer who habitually doesn’t tip. Fountain posted about his move on TikTok, explaining that he doesn’t work “for free.” The video has been viewed more than 335,000 times.
In the note, Fountain wrote: “If you can’t afford to tip, then you should go pick it up yourself. Who do you think you are to order food and have someone come and bring it to your door for FREE? FOR FREE?”
In an interview with Insider, he said he’s been working for the delivery service since December. He went on to say that the customer regularly doesn’t tip, and he posted the video to “make a statement.”
In their own statement, DoorDash called the driver’s actions “inappropriate.”
“This behavior is clearly inappropriate and has no place on the DoorDash platform. We are looking into this incident and will take appropriate action,” said a spokesperson for DoorDash in a statement to Insider.
Fountain’s post garnered a slew of different responses, some agreeing with his move and others criticizing him. “It technically wasn’t free. DoorDash paid you,” one person replied. Another person wrote, “I never tip. I pay the service fees to DoorDash or UberEats; that’s enough. If you don’t make enough money, then get a new job.”
DoorDash confirmed that drivers are compensated a minimum amount before delivering to customers. “I didn’t realize these many people support not tipping drivers,” said Fountain.

I agree with Fountain. If yiu can afford to pay some times up to 200 dollars of food you must pay the tip. In my opinion there should be a rule that at least 10 % of the order must pay by customer as a tip. You go to restuarant and pay tip the waiter who serve you food just from kitchen till your table ( even you pay the restuarant your food and waiter work with a basic pay)so how come you can be so ignorant and bad ass to say that Oh we dint pay tip Doordash and Uber pay them. Guys Uber and doordash pay them miserable amount of money which some times not worth for even their time and gas. They work with same expectations of waiters in a bar or any resturant to get tip. Well done Fountain , yiu have the guts to show the world about this fact . I hope thise miserable people learn some good manners who consider not paying tip a person bringing food at their door without knowing that they have to face many difficulties finding parkings,wait in the restuartants , rain ,snow and lot more. So next time if yiu do not pay a tip you are an ass hole.
