The leader behind the United States’ response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Dr. Anthony Fauci, says the pandemic exposed how “the undeniable effects of racism” has led to unacceptable health disparities that have greatly impacted Black, Brown and indigenous communities.
On Sunday, Fauci spoke via webcast at a graduation ceremony for students graduating from Emory University. “Covid-19 has shown a bright light on our own society’s failings,” he said. According to NBC News, Fauci also informed students of color that those working essential jobs would be more exposed to Rona. He mentioned that students of color are more likely to be infected if exposed to Rona due to medical conditions that run rampant in communities of color like hypertension, chronic lung disease, diabetes, obesity, and more.
“Now, very few of these comorbidities have racial determinants,” Fauci said. “Almost all relate to the social determinants of health dating back to disadvantageous conditions that some people of color find themselves in from birth regarding the availability of an adequate diet, access to health care and the undeniable effects of racism in our society.”
Fauci went on to say that it will take years to fix the issues the government has made in society. Fauci urged the youth to take a stand in creating change. He concluded his statement by saying that even when “some form of normality” is restored, we should not forget Rona disproportionally affects and kills people of color.
