Dr. Umar Johnson claims that Eminem cannot be considered the G.OA.T. (Greatest of all time) because he is white.
During a segment on Joe Budden‘s namesake podcast, Dr. Umar Johnson discussed the participation of white individuals in Black culture, specifically in hip-hop.
He claimed that this dynamic is a disservice to African Americans and pointed out Eminem, stating that he enjoys too much privilege.
“One of the issues I have with the fact that we let non-Africans participate in our culture so much,” Johnson said. “They can do so as a hobby because whenever they want to take off their n*gga suit, they can put their white privilege suit right back on and pick up the privileges they had before they made the rap album.”
Dr. Umar argued that regardless of race, Caucasians should never be deemed the greatest in something, like rap music, which he believes belongs to the Black community.
“This is going to my African fundamentalism. No non-African can ever be the best of anything African. It is an insult to the ancestors, it is an insult to the race, and it is an insult to every Black person,” he said.
“We gotta stop naming non-African people as the best of any aspect of our cultural power because it is an insult… I can acknowledge Eminem’s talent. But for you to put him at the top, that’s white supremacy.”
