Drake is congratulating his scholarship recipient whose perseverance paid off!
While filming his “God’s Plan” music video in 2018, the Grammy winner gave a $50,000 scholarship to University of Miami student Destiny James. In 2019, James earned a bachelor’s degree in public health from the University. And now, she’ll be receiving a master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this week.
“Mama, I mastered it. Daddy, I did it … 4 days until I am officially UNC Alum,” She captioned a photo of herself wearing her graduation garb on Instagram.
Drake was seen in her comment section saying “LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DES,” to which James replied, “THANK YOUUUU!!”
In a May 2019 blog post on the University of Miami’s website, James addressed the life-changing scholarship she got from Drake, remembering how she didn’t expect to graduate after her father died of cancer during her freshman year.
“If you would have told me my freshman year that I would be graduating from here today, I probably wouldn’t have believed it,” she said.
“I’m meant to be doing this work,” she added. “Everything I went through was so worth it. Thanks to Drake, I’m probably stressing about classes and work, but I’m not stressing about tuition. I’m here to tell future ‘Canes to not be afraid of change and trust the process.”
