Drake – “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” (Album Review) blogged by @niksofly

Mrs. Carter set the bar for surprise projects with the release of her self titled album, Beyonce, in 2013. Negating traditional promotion, she work exclusively on iTunes. Following Beyonce’s  lead, Drake released his new LP “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” early Friday Morning sans months of marketing most labels want. There are whispers that this project was  to fulfill his contract with Cash Money, subsequently freeing Aubrey to leave.  Whether that is the case or not, what is concrete is that this is a well formulated & executed project  and the decision to charge is a statement  in regards to good music.

While anticipation swelled for “Views From The 6”, Drake told fans and critics alike (not in so many words) to thank him later (pun intended). The 17 tracks laced with features from Party Next Door , Wayne and Travis Scott bang on the production of some of today’s heavy hitters.  This release came only hours after Drake gave fans “The Jungle”, a short film following himself and the OVO crew through the streets of Toronto.  “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” is definitely the mixtape you play from beginning to end as you cruise the streets.

The somber mixtape kicks off with the ingenious song “Legends” where Drake delves into his legacy.  Drake’s arrogance is articulated in songs “6 PM New York” and “Know Thyself”.  The track “Used To” is another confident song that describes the evolution of progress. In true Drake form, Aubrey hits listeners with the solemn lady -friendly tracks “Jungle” and “Company”. The mellow tones of “No Tellin’ “ and “Now & Forever” marries well with the feel of the project. “ God” , “Star 67” , and “ 6 Man” are three fire tracks on this Mixtape. Drake drops several lines that ether any naysayer that believe his style is wack. The talent can not be denied.  The conversation styled “Madonna” beats on any system. Don’t sleep on “Preach” . The song is layered with textures that nestle nicely in the canals of the ears. This is totally a statement album from Drake. “ You gotta know, I’m here to f!ck with n!ggas souls” [6 Man]. <—That’s the statement.
