One person has been killed and several others were injured after a drive-by shooting near a candle vigil in Baytown, Texas.
This past Sunday night, nearly 50 people gathered outside to acknowledge the life and passing of a homicide victim. At around 6:40 p.m., a vehicle crept up near the crowd. A person exited the car and then started shooting the people. NBC News reports the vigil was located about 20 miles west of Houston.
According to Houston officials, one person was killed and 13 others were injured. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez says three people were taken to the hospital by air medical transport.
“Right as they were releasing the balloons up into the air was when the vehicle came,” Gonzalez told a crowd during a Sunday night press conference, NBC News reports. “Almost at that exact time is when they opened fire into a crowd.” He added that there was “possibly a young child who perhaps sustained a wound.”
Disha Allen died at the hospital after the shooting. Gonzalez says that other victims are currently recovering from “serious gunshot wound injuries,” Gonzalez says. The suspects were said to have been driving a “small dark-colored sedan.” No motive has been determined.
