Dustin Lance Black Checks Sam Smith On Twitter

Things got real when Sam Smith took to the stage to accept his Academy Award on Sunday night. Openly gay singer, Sam Smith, took home the Oscar for Best Original Song for “Writing’s on the Wall”, the  theme song for the Bond thriller, “Spectre.” Though Smith had a pretty shaky night during his performance, it’s what he said during his acceptance speech that made headlines.  “I read an article a few months ago, by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar, and if this is the case — and even if it isn’t the case — I want to dedicate this to the L.G.B.T. community all around the world.”

No big deal, right?

Screenwriter, director, film and television producer, Dustin Lance Black, had to quickly remind Smith that HE won an Oscar for  best original screenplay for “Milk” 7 years prior. If that wasn’t enough, he also told Sam Smith to stop texting his man, Tom Daley,  while he’s at it. “Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé,” Dustin Lance Black tweeted along with a video of his Oscar acceptance speech in 2009.

He continued, “THE POINT: knowing our LGBTQ history is important. We stand on the shoulders of countless brave men and women who paved the way for us.”

Dustin wasn’t the first gay man to win an Oscar either.  Sir John Gielgud, an openly gay actor, won best actor in a supporting role in 1981 for his performance in “Arthur”,  Elton John won an Oscar in 1994 in the Best Song category for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” from “The Lion King.” The list goes on.

Looks to me like this was Dustin Black’s way of throwing a little shade at Sam Smith.
