A now-deceased Dutch Gynecologist who worked at an artificial insemination program has recently been found to have fathered at least 17 children without the parents’ knowledge.
Gynecologist Jan Wildschut worked at Sophia Hospital, now known as Isala Hospital, in Zwolle from 1981 to 1993. The hospital found that Wildschut used his own sperm during the insemination processes unbeknownst to the women, resulting in 17 successful pregnancies and births. Wildschut’s donor children were all confirmed using DNA tests.
“From a moral perspective, Isala finds it unacceptable that a gynecologist-fertility doctor was both practitioner and sperm donor,” the hospital said in a statement.
Surprisingly, Wildschut’s donor children and his family speak regularly and have established a good relationship with each other.
A DNA profile for the deceitful doctor has since been created to check and see if other children born from fertility treatments at the hospital are the offspring of Wildschut.
