The NBA legend reflected on how the conversation started years ago when the couple moved from Miami to Los Angeles. Union, known for her independence, had insisted on splitting big purchases equally—like their home.
“My wife came to me and said she wanted to go 50/50 on things like buying a house, and I said, ‘Sure, baby, if that’s what you wanna do,’” Wade explained. “And if she comes to me now and says she doesn’t want to, I’m like, ‘Sure, baby, if that’s what you wanna do.’ The house might be smaller if we’re just going off my salary, but it’s all good.”
Union made headlines in 2023 after revealing she went 50/50 with Wade, sparking a social media debate about relationship finances. However, her perspective recently shifted. During an interview on the Balanced Black Girl podcast, Union shared that her insistence on splitting costs was rooted in past trauma and a need for control.
“I famously said, 50/50 or bust, right? And I meant that financially, spiritually, emotionally,” Union shared. “But there are a lot of days when I have 10%, and I need him to be 90. There are days when I don’t have anything, and I need him to be 100.”
Wade supported her vulnerability, adding, “I had to allow her to come to that herself. When she wanted to do 50/50, I was like, ‘Do your thing, boo boo.’ And now if she’s in her soft era, I’m with it too.”
Union’s recent reflections emphasized that her shift wasn’t about Wade’s ability to pay but about learning to trust and embrace vulnerability in their marriage. “It’s about being open enough to know that I’m OK as his wife, and he’s OK as my husband. I deserve it,” she said.
