Dwyane Wade is known for his dominance on the basketball court, but the three-time NBA champion recently revealed one of the toughest battles of his life. On his podcast, The Why with Dwyane Wade, the former Miami Heat star shared that he underwent surgery on December 18, 2023, to remove 40% of his right kidney after doctors found a cancerous tumor.

Wade, 43, said he had been putting off a physical for some time, but urinary issues led him to finally seek medical attention. During the checkup, doctors discovered a tumor on his kidney that could not be biopsied, leaving surgery as the best option.

“I had a personal decision to make,” Wade explained. “If this is cancerous, if this tumor, this cyst is cancerous on your kidney, you’re 41 years old, you probably need surgery because it’s something that needs to be removed so it doesn’t spread.”

Following surgery, the tumor was confirmed to be cancerous, marking one of the most challenging moments of Wade’s life. He admitted that the experience left him feeling vulnerable, something his family had never seen before.

“My own journey to have that surgery, I think it was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,” Wade said. “That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life.”

Despite the emotional and physical toll, Wade found strength in his loved ones. “What I saw in the midst of me going through my illness, I saw my family that may not always talk, may not always agree. I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me, and in that process, in my weakness, I found strength in my family.”

Wade, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023, cemented his legacy with 16 NBA seasons, averaging 22.0 points, 5.4 assists, and 4.7 rebounds.
