Former NBA Player Dwayne Wade sat down with Matt Barnes for an episode of sports podcast “All The Smoke.”
During the interview, Wade discussed supporting his child Zion and his sexuality.
“If you want to talk about strength and courage, my 12-year-old has way more than I have. You can learn something from your kids,” Wade said in the interview.
Wade says in the interview that he and his wife realized Zion “wasn’t on the boy vibe that Zaire was on” at 3-years-old.
“I had to look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘What if your son comes home and tell you he’s gay? What are you going to do? How are you going to be? How are you going to act? It ain’t about him. He knows who he is. It’s about you. Who are you?” Wade said in regards to when he had this realization. “I watched my son, from day one, become into who she now eventually come into. And for me, it’s all about nothing changes with my love. Nothing changes in my responsibilities. So, the only thing I had to do now is get smarter, educate myself more. And that’s my job.”
Recently Wade has had to take to social media to defend his son against the negative comments.
During the interview, Wade emphasized ensuring that your children have a voice in your household.
“In my household, man that’s all we talk about. We talk about making sure our kids be seen by each of us… We talk about making sure our kids ensure the power in their voice. We want them to be whoever they feel that they can be in this world,” Wade said.
