At 9:04 a.m. Saturday, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake with its epicenter near Greenback, Tennessee, just 30 miles southwest of Knoxville, sent tremors across north Georgia, rattling homes and nerves as far south as Lake Oconee.
“People from all over metro Atlanta…have called Atlanta News First, saying the quake shook their walls and floors.”
Though not unheard of, such seismic activity in Georgia is uncommon.
“Earthquakes aren’t necessarily uncommon across Georgia,” but only a dozen minor tremors have been reported since 2020, three of those in north Georgia.
The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the quake’s magnitude and location, sparking surprise across Atlanta’s viewing area.
As of now, no injuries have been reported.
