Ed Sheeran shares why he thought he was gay while growing up.
Sheeran, 30, sat down for an interview with Dutch podcast “Man Man Man,” and while there, he opened up about his journey to understanding his sexuality growing up. The singer says he never felt “hugely masculine.”
Sheeran says there are only so many stereotypically-masculine things that he likes a man. “I definitely have a big feminine side. I love musical theatre. I love pop music. I love Britney Spears. My masculine side probably stops at drinking beer and watching football,” he said, Buzzfeed reports.
Because of his different interests, Sheeran, at one point, believed he was gay. “When I was a kid, I thought I was gay for a bit,” he shared. He went on to say that he’d rather watch women’s sports. “I watched it and I was like, ‘I don’t know why I watch male football, this is much better.’”
On top of that, he says cars don’t really catch his eye either. “I am not a car guy. I like a nice car, but I’m not a car guy.” His sexuality, he says, became a lot clearer when he met his wife. “But then, my wife is super pro-women and femininity. And so, as soon as we started dating, my life shifted to that,” said Sheeran.
“She plays in a female hockey team. We hang out with all the team. It’s very much women empowerment,” the singer added.
