Eddie Murphy returned to Saturday Night Live for the first time in 35 years in a monumental episode. Fans eagerly tuned in to see the “Nutty Professor” actor and comedian hit the stage, making it the most-watched episode of “Saturday Night Live” since 2017, with 9.921 million Live+Same Day viewers
Fellow comedians Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Larry David, Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan also made guest appearances in the episode. Lizzo was the musical guest of the evening, performing her hit singles “Truth Hurts” and “Good As Hell.”
Murphy incorporated characters from his original tenure on SNL including Mister Robinson, Gumby and Buckwheat. Murphy also jokingly roasted incarcerated fellow comedian, Bill Cosby.
The previous highest viewed episode was hosted by comedian and actress Melissa McCarthy, where she impersonated former White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer. The episode brought in 10.382 million viewers overall. The performer of the evening was pop band, HAIM.
Saturday Night Live will return in 2020 with Adam Driver as the host of the first episode.
