On Friday, Mexican President, Enrique Pena Nieto, made the announcement that drug kingpin, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, had been captured by marines after a shoot out. Now it is being reported that El Chapo will be returning to the very same prison from which he escaped from just six months ago.
El Chapo escaped from Mexico’s most secure prison in Altiplano via a mile-long underground tunnel he dug in the showers. Guards supposedly ignored all the loud hammering while the tunnel was under construction. Not this time. This time, the Mexican military will station a pair of tanks outside of the prison.
You’ll never guess what got El Chapo caught up. Hint: It’s what get everyone caught up, FAME. According to Attorney General Arely Gomez Gonzalez, El Chapo wanted to make a biopic about his life and started reaching out to actors and producers. In doing so, investigators were eventually tipped off to his location. He also began building more tunnels, a tunneling expert traced a tunnel to Los Mochis, the city where he was found. Before El Chapo was caught, he tried to escape through a sewer tunnel. Soldiers chased him through the sewer tunnels, but he made it to the surface where he stole a car. According to CNN, authorities located the car on a highway outside the city and nabbed him. There are so many stories surrounding his capture, it’s hard to know what the truth is.
His 2015 escape served as El Chapo’s second escape in 14 years. Do you think he has one more in him?
