The wife of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was arrested at Dulles International Airport in Virginia on Monday on international drug charges.
According to the Department of Justice, Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, was charged in a single count indictment with conspiracy to distribute heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana for importation into the United States.
She is also charged with participating in helping her husband, on his July 11, 2015, escape from a Mexican prison. After Guzman was re-arrested in Mexico in January of 2016, it is alleged that Coronel Aispuro participated in planning another escape for him along with others; before his extradition to the U.S the following January.
Coronel Aispuro is scheduled to appear virtually in federal court tomorrow in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
El Chapo was sentenced to life in prison in July of 2019 for his role as the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.
