Elizabeth Warren is apologizing for her previous claim to Native American heritage.
Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren is apologizing and walking back her handling of her Native American ancestry. On Monday, the 70-year-old addressed the controversy during an event in Sioux City, Iowa. Warren sparked outcry after her use of a DNA test to validate her Native American ancestry.
“Like anyone who has been honest with themselves, I know I have made mistakes,” the Massachusetts senator said at a forum. “I am sorry for the harm I have caused.”She continued, “I have listened, and I have learned a lot, and I am grateful for the many conversations that we’ve had together,” Warren said. Last week, Warren proposed her plans to tackle the many issues affecting Native Americans.
“It is a great honor to be able to partner with Indian Country, and that’s what I’ve tried to do as a senator, and that’s what I promise I will do as president of the United States of America,” Warren added. Warren went on to speak about how she planned to target the dearth of federal funding that tribal nations have historically received.
In addition, she mentioned her proposal would also allow tribes to enforce laws against non-tribal members and permanently establish a Cabinet-level position that focuses on Native American policies, according to Vox.
