The internet’s most lovable red monster had his X account hijacked over the weekend, when someone took control of Elmo’s profile and used it to post hate-filled and violent messages.
Screenshots show antisemitic language, racist slurs, and mentions of Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein. All of it clashed with everything Elmo represents. The posts were taken down, but the account itself has been quiet ever since.
Sesame Workshop confirmed the breach. A spokesperson said, “Elmo’s X account was compromised by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts.” They added that steps were being taken to get full control of the account back.
This comes just over a year after Elmo turned X into an emotional check-in space with one simple question: “How is everybody doing?”
That post went viral, leading to thousands of people sharing their mental health struggles. “Elmo is glad he asked. Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing. Elmo will check in again soon, friends! Elmo loves you.”
It wasn’t just another celebrity account getting spammed. It was a direct hit on a symbol of childhood innocence.
There’s still no official update from the Elmo account itself. Fans are waiting to hear from him again, not just for the sake of updates, but to bring that familiar energy back to the timeline.
