Elon Musk is making another high-stakes move to change the way X operates.
On Saturday, the tech mogul took to his platform to announce that the company is preparing to open source its recommendation algorithm in just one week.
According to Musk, this release will include “all code used to determine what organic and advertising posts are recommended to users,” marking a massive shift in how the social media giant handles its proprietary data.
This isn’t the first time Musk has promised to be transparent about the site’s inner workings. Back in 2023, a version of the code for the “For You” feed was published on GitHub, but critics and researchers quickly realized it was incomplete and lacked the most crucial details. Musk is aiming to fix that reputation this time around by committing to a recurring schedule. He stated that the release “will be repeated every 4 weeks, with comprehensive developer notes, to help you understand what changed.”
The timing of this announcement is no coincidence. X is currently navigating heavy pressure from global regulators, including the European Commission and authorities in France, who have been investigating the platform for algorithmic bias and the spread of illegal content.
Just days ago, the EU extended an order requiring X to preserve all data related to its algorithms through 2026. By opening the code to the public, Musk is seemingly attempting to get ahead of these investigations by allowing independent developers to audit the system themselves.
Beyond regulation, the platform is also battling a massive surge in automated bot activity. Recent reports indicate that crypto-related bot messages on X spiked by over 1,200% in a single day, leading to widespread down ranking of legitimate content.
Musk believes that moving to an open source model will help the community identify these biases and help the platform fight back against “spam-like conduct.
If Musk follows through on his 7 day deadline, it could set a major new precedent for transparency across the entire social media industry.
