A political action committee (PAC) backing former President Donald Trump, funded by billionaire Elon Musk, is under criminal investigation in Michigan. The PAC, known as America PAC, is being scrutinized by the Michigan secretary of state’s office over its efforts to collect voter data.
Elon Musk, has publicly stated that he created and helped fund America PAC, which supports Trump.
According to CNBC, the America PAC has been gathering detailed voter information from residents in Michigan and other battleground states. This data collection occurs through a “register to vote” section on the PAC’s website. After clicking this tab, users can submit their ZIP code, address, and phone number. However, those with a Michigan address are taken to a “thank you” page asking them to “complete the form below” to finish the registration process. As of Sunday afternoon, no additional form was available beyond the thank you message.
A spokesperson for the Michigan secretary of state’s office stressed the importance of transparency, stating, “Every citizen should know exactly how their personal information is being used by PACs, especially if an entity is claiming it will help people register to vote in Michigan or any other state.” The office is reviewing America PAC’s activities to determine if there are any violations of state law, with any potential violations to be referred to the Michigan Attorney General’s office.
This investigation follows reports that the PAC’s website was not effectively registering voters in swing states.
