Emmett Till’s White “Girlfriend” Speaks Out For The First Time, “He Was A Gentleman”

It’s been more than 60 years since the murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till and new developments continue to come in.

According to journalist William Bradford Huie, who secured the confessions of both killers J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant in 1956, Till was killed because he boasted of having a white girl and showed them the picture of a white girl in Chicago. That white girl is Joan Brody.

#DailyMail reports the photo Till had shown was a picture of some of the white kids he had graduated elementary school from and had pointed to the white girl in the picture who he referred to as his “girlfriend,” according to a Till documentary producer #HenryHampton.

Joan Brody told the #ClarionLedger she ended up as Till’s classmate at an integrated school because #Chicago Public Schools kept fewer schools open in the summer and she needed more credits to attend another school where her family was moving. She was quoted speaking very highly of Till, stating, “I want people to know that he did go to an integrated school and that he was a nice kid. He was not the kid he was made out to be.” She went on to say, “He wasn’t a smart-alecky kid. He wasn’t a person to smart off to a white woman or any woman… He could have been president,” Brody said. “He was just a nice kid with a nice smile.”

The government has reopened the case citing “new information”.
