A number of Black entertainers are being recognized at the 75th Emmy Awards, as confirmed by the nomination list revealed on Wednesday.
Quinta Brunson’s “Abbott Elementary” is posed to take home several trophies, with five nominations this year. Brunson herself is in the running for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series as well as Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series for her appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” Tyler James Williams is also being acknowledged for his role in the hilarious school comedy in the category for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Co-star Janelle James is nominated in the female category alongside Sheryl Lee Ralph. Even Taraji P. Henson is being considered for her appearance on the show in the Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series category.
Another series that spawned several Black contenders is “The Last Of Us.” Actor Lamar Johnson holds a position in the Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series. Storm Reid also scored a nod for the female category, while Keivonn Montreal Woodard stands to win the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
Niecy Nash-Betts is also gunning for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role as Glenda Cleveland in Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” Nash flawlessly portrayed the neighbor who tried countless times to stop the serial killer from killing Black and brown young men, despite law enforcement’s dismal of her claims.
Several game show and competition television hosts could take home awards at this year’s ceremony. Steve Harvey, Nicole Byer, Rupaul, Karamo Brown, and Lady of the Hour, Keke Palmer are all being praised on the nominations list for their stellar hosting performances.
The 2023 Emmys is set to take place live on NBC on September 18th at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
